Our ancestors did it because they wanted to get our letters and vocabulary from Chinese. Just like Europeans did with Latin and ancient Greek in their alphabet.
I find this import has many problems. For example, we use kanji (Chinese characters), but they don't have the same meaning in Chinese.
Another point is we cannot say the same sound through our language with the English sphere. Of course, this is similar with the Chinese version.
